This guide will walk you through the essential steps and requirements to obtain your Connecticut Speech and Language Pathologist Licensure, ensuring you're well-prepared to make a significant impact in the lives of students and clients.
Essential Requirements for Licensure
Before you apply for licensure, it's crucial to familiarize yourself with the general licensing policies. Here's a breakdown of the key requirements:
- Hold a master's or doctorate degree in speech and language pathology from a program accredited by the Educational Standards Board of the American Speech Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) at the time of your graduation.
- Successfully complete a Supervised Professional Experience (SPE) period in speech and language pathology. This can be completed in Connecticut or an equivalent experience in another state.
- Professional work experience in another state may substitute the SPE requirement if you held a master's or doctorate degree and were licensed, certified, or held an ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence at the time experience commenced.
- Successfully pass the NTE Specialty Area Test in speech and language pathology administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The passing score varies based on the date of examination.
- The written examination requirement may be waived if you hold a current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competency, but all other education and experience requirements must be met.
Documentation Requirements
To complete your application for licensure, ensure the following documents are submitted directly to the Connecticut Department of Public Health:
- A master's or doctorate transcript verifying your degree in speech and language pathology.
- Verification of completion of the Supervised Professional Experience. Forms are available for both in-state and out-of-state SPEs.
- If substituting work experience for the SPE, verification of at least 9 months of full-time or 18 months of part-time work experience is required.
- If applicable, verification of successful completion of the NTE sent directly from ETS.
- Verification of Certificate in Clinical Competency, sent directly from ASHA.
- Verification of all licenses held, current or expired, from each state. Note that some jurisdictions may charge a fee for this service.
- A completed online application with an attached photograph. The application fee is $200.
