Unlocking Your Occupational Therapy License: Key FAQs for Michigan

Unlocking Your Occupational Therapy License: Key FAQs for Michigan

As an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant in Michigan, understanding the ins and outs of your licensing requirements is crucial. Whether you're new to the field or renewing your license, it's essential to stay informed. Here's a concise guide to help you navigate some of the most common questions regarding occupational therapy licensing in Michigan.

License Validity and Renewal

Your initial occupational therapy license is valid for 2 years, and subsequent renewals will also be valid for 2 years. You will receive a renewal notification postcard and email approximately 90 days before your license expires. It's important to keep your contact information up to date with the Department to ensure you receive these notifications. Remember, it's your responsibility to renew your license on time, regardless of whether you receive the notification.

You can renew your license online through your MiPLUS account. Payments can be made using a debit or credit card with a Discover, MasterCard, American Express, or Visa logo.

Continuing Education (CE) Requirements

Continuing education is a must for license renewal. While you don't need to submit proof of your CE hours with your renewal application, you must retain documentation for 4 years in case of an audit. Here are the key points:

Make sure to complete your CE requirements before your renewal deadline to avoid any complications.

Human Trafficking Training

Identifying and helping victims of human trafficking is an essential skill for healthcare professionals. As per Administrative Rule R 338.1215, you must complete a one-time training on identifying victims of human trafficking. This training is separate from your CE requirements and must be completed by specific deadlines based on your renewal year. Beginning October 19, 2022, this training is also a requirement for initial licensure.

The training can be completed through various formats, including teleconferences, webinars, online presentations, live presentations, or printed/electronic media. The training should cover:

Acceptable training sources include nationally or state-recognized health organizations, state or federal agencies, approved educational programs, or peer-reviewed journals.

Filing a Complaint

If you need to file a complaint against a healthcare professional, you can find detailed information on the Bureau of Professional Licensing's website at www.michigan.gov/bpl.

Administrative Rules and Jurisprudence Exam

You can view the current Administrative Rules for occupational therapists and assistants on the Bureau of Professional Licensing's website. Additionally, all applicants must pass the jurisprudence exam before licensure. The exam covers material from the Michigan Board of Occupational Therapy's Administrative Rules and the Michigan Public Health Code.

To schedule your exam, contact PSI at www.psiexams.com or call 800-733-9267.

Staying informed about these requirements ensures that you maintain your license and continue to provide excellent care to your clients. For more information, please follow this link.
