Artificial intelligence in schools can feel like it arrived overnight. One day it’s lesson plans and worksheets, and the next day students are asking chatbots to explain algebra, summarize articles, or help brainstorm writing ideas. That “suddenness” was front and center in the U.S. House Subcommittee hearing held April 1, 2025:

.For school leaders, educators, and student support teams, the hearing offered a clear message: AI is already in classrooms, and the real work now is helping students and staff use it responsibly, safely, and effectively.

Supporters at the hearing emphasized AI’s potential to provide something schools have always wanted but struggled to deliver consistently: personalization.
Examples included AI tutoring tools that can adapt to a student’s pace, strengths, and gaps. The hearing discussed the idea that high-dosage tutoring can drive major learning gains, and AI could make tutoring more available and affordable.
From a student services perspective, personalization matters beyond academics. Many students need individualized support across communication, learning, and social participation. When AI is used thoughtfully, it can help staff tailor instruction and interventions—especially when it reduces administrative load and gives educators more time for direct human connection.
3) Teachers don’t need replacement—they need relief
A theme echoed by multiple witnesses: AI should augment educators, not automate them.
One superintendent shared a powerful example: a veteran teacher was ready to retire due to the sheer time burden of grading writing. By creating an AI-supported workflow (paired with a state writing rubric and the teacher’s own expectations), the teacher could provide faster feedback without spending hours every night grading alone.
Whether or not a district uses AI in exactly that way, the underlying insight is important: when AI reduces repetitive tasks, teachers can spend more time on what only humans can do—relationships, motivation, coaching, and real-time instruction.
This is also relevant to school-based therapy services. Student progress improves when adults have time to connect, observe, and respond. Technology that gives time back to staff can indirectly strengthen the student support ecosystem—if implemented responsibly.
4) AI literacy is becoming as essential as digital literacy
Several witnesses argued that “AI literacy” must become a core competency—not only for students, but also for educators, caregivers, and communities.
AI literacy isn’t just “how to use a tool.” It includes understanding:
- What AI is (and what it is not)
- How AI generates outputs (and why it can be wrong)
- How bias can show up in results
- What privacy risks exist when data is entered into tools
- How to evaluate sources and verify claims
For districts, this points to a practical need: professional development that goes beyond a one-time webinar. Staff need ongoing training, examples, and shared language so that AI use becomes consistent and aligned with district values.
5) The risks are real: cheating, privacy, bias, and over-immersion
The hearing did not sugarcoat the challenges. Four risks stood out.
Academic integrity and “shortcuts”
AI can become a shortcut that bypasses critical thinking. The hearing noted that many students admit to using AI without permission for assignments. Districts may need to rethink assessment design, shifting more work into supervised settings and emphasizing demonstrations of understanding (discussion, drafts, reflections, and oral explanations).
Student data privacy and security
Privacy concerns came up repeatedly. If students or staff enter personally identifiable information into public AI tools, districts can run into serious compliance and safety issues.
Practical district actions include:
- Clear rules on what data can and cannot be entered into AI tools
- Vendor vetting and contract review (data retention, training use, access controls)
- Staff training on “scrubbing” identifying information
- Cybersecurity readiness, since schools are frequent targets of ransomware
Bias and fairness
AI reflects the data it is trained on—and that data can encode bias. The hearing raised concerns about tools that might disproportionately flag certain students (including differences tied to race, disability, or even dialect and regional language patterns).
For schools, this is a reminder: AI outputs should never be treated as unquestionable truth. Human review and transparent processes matter, especially when decisions affect grading, discipline, special education supports, or access to opportunities.
Over-immersion and reduced human connection
One witness highlighted a striking comparison: AI-based mental health chat tools may help some students a little, but meaningful relationships with real adults in schools are far more protective for student well-being.
In other words, the goal is not to build a school experience where students interact primarily with screens. The goal is to use AI to strengthen the human-centered parts of school by freeing time, improving access, and supporting better decision-making.

Even though the hearing focused broadly on K–12 education, its themes apply directly to student support services—especially as schools look for scalable ways to meet needs.

AI in K–12 isn’t a single decision—it’s a new operating environment. The districts that do best will likely be the ones that treat AI like any other major shift: plan carefully, train consistently, and keep students’ well-being at the center.
